TEXT Matthew 5.6
ESV 6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
CEV 6 God blesses those people who want to obey him more than to eat or drink. They will be given what they want!
MSG 6 “You’re blessed when you’ve worked up a good appetite for God. He’s food and drink in the best meal you’ll ever eat.
NLT 6 God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they will be satisfied.
- HUNGER & THIRST
a strong desire; deepest cravings
Psalm 42.1-2a ESV
1 As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God.
2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
Psalm 63.1 ESV
1 O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
Psalm 84.2 ESV
1 How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord of hosts!
2 My soul longs, yes, faints for the courts of the Lord; my heart and flesh sing for joy to the living God.
- God does not PROVE me right. Righteousness is accomplished only by God, not me.
- God does not MAKE me right. My righteousness is not mine, it is God’s – through me.
- God does ACCEPT me and declares me to be in right relationship with Him.
- SPIRITUAL SATISFACTION
John 7.37-39 ESV
37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” 39 Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
“Here then is the problem: we settle for so much less than what God has for us in terms of righteousness. Partial goodness, partial righteousness is good enough for most of us if any more takes any extra amount of work.” – Dr. Gary Denbow
