TEXT Ephesians 4.1-3 ESV
1 I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
5 Characteristics of the Worthy Walk
- WALK IN HUMILITY
Humility is “a true estimate of oneself as [I am] in God’s sight.” – Homer A. Kent, Jr.
1 Peter 5.5; Micah 6.8
- WALK IN GENTLENESS
Gentleness is meekness: “Strength under control”
- WALK WITH PATIENCE
1 Corinthians 13.1 ESV4 Love is patient and kind
- WALK IN FORBEARANCE WITH LOVE
The practical outworking of longsuffering; mutual tolerance
- WALK IN UNITY AND PEACE
- We can’t create or legislate or organize into being
- Is not automatic
- Is not always easy
Unity is not equal to unanimity. We can be in unity without being unanimous in our opinions or perspectives.
“The unity Paul had in mind is not external ecclesiastical union. It is a heart unity and concerns relationships and attitudes rather than organization. The word translated “unity” is an abstract term for what is elsewhere in the Scriptures referred to as fellowship.” – W. Curtis Vaughan
