If you woke up tomorrow, and God only allowed you to keep the things you thanked Him for today, what would you still have?
1 Thessalonians 5:18 “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
- Not after things improve.
- Not when life feels fair.
- In all circumstances.
Gratitude isn’t a reaction, it’s a discipline. Gratitude isn’t a personality trait, it’s a choice.
Philippians 2:14–15 Do all things without grumbling or disputing… that you may be blameless and innocent… among whom you shine as lights in the world.
- Gratitude is evangelistic.
- Complaining destroys your witness and testimony.
- Why is it SO MUCH EASIER to complain, than show gratitude?
Luke 17:11–19 : Jesus heals 10 lepers, but only ONE returns to say thank you.
- Jesus didn’t say, “No problem.”
- Jesus said: “Where are the other nine?”
- God notices gratitude, and He notices the lack of it.
We Are Rich
- If you own a pillow, access to clean water, and eat 3 meals a day, you are wealthier than most people in all of recorded human history.
- Americans throw away more food each year than some countries eat.
- We complain about Wi-Fi speeds, traffic and the thermostat temperature while living lives kings of old could not imagine.
- We have endless comfort, but endless anxiety…
- Why?
- Because comfort produces expectation, but gratitude produces worship.
“A gift feels like grace the first time, kindness the second, but by the third or fourth, we begin to think we deserve it.” C.S. Lewis
Israel in the wilderness is the perfect biblical illustration:
Day 1: “Manna! God provides! This is amazing!”
Day 40: “Ugh… manna. Again?”
Same blessing. Different heart posture.
Numbers 11:6 “Now our strength is dried up, and there is nothing at all but this manna.”
They didn’t need more miracles. They needed more gratitude.
Comfort → Expectation → Entitlement → Disappointment
Human nature drifts downward:
- When we first receive something, it feels like a blessing.
- After a little while, it becomes normal.
- Soon, we assume it’s owed to us.
- And eventually, we become offended if it’s taken away.
Comfort isn’t wrong, but comfort without gratitude breeds entitlement.
Gratitude is what keeps blessings from becoming expectations.
Human nature craves comfort, comfort says we don’t need God.
We chase comfort, as comfort whispers, ‘You’re fine without God.’
The Science of Gratitude
Researchers at UC Davis and Harvard studied people who intentionally practiced thankfulness.
- People who wrote down 3 things they were grateful for every day experienced:
- Lower anxiety and depression
- Improved sleep
- Higher immune function
- Increased patience and self-control
- Greater optimism and life satisfaction
- MRI brain scans show that gratitude literally rewires neural pathways, strengthening areas related to:
- Joy
- Resilience
- Empathy
- Problem solving
- Practicing gratitude reduces activity in the amygdala, the fear and stress center.
Gratitude doesn’t just change your attitude, it changes your brain.
Science finally caught up with Scripture!!!
The Spiritual Truth
Gratitude doesn’t just make you feel better, it aligns your heart with reality.
- Everything we have is a gift.
- We deserve nothing, yet God gave us everything in Christ.
- Romans 8:32 (ESV) “He who did not spare his own Son… how will he not also graciously give us all things?”
- We are saved not by entitlement, but by grace.
The 7-Day Gratitude Challenge:
This is the week of Thanksgiving. Normally we all sit around the table and say what we’re thankful for on Thursday, but I have a 7 Day Gratitude Challenge for you to attempt…
Every day for the next week:
- Write down three things you’re thankful for.
- Tell one person you’re thankful for them.
- Thank God out loud for something specific, not generic.
- Gratitude unexpressed is ingratitude.
Charles Spurgeon once said:
“It is not how much we have, but how much we enjoy, that makes us truly rich.”
Gratitude doesn’t add more to your life, It opens your eyes to the blessings already there.
