The 5 Habits of the Christian Life : Cultivating a Prayer Life

Discover how to cultivate a powerful prayer life based on Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 6. Learn how prayer builds relationship with God, produces humility and mercy, relieves anxiety, and invites breakthrough and deliverance into your daily life.

In this message from the series The Five Habits of the Christian Life, the focus is on cultivating a prayer life as a daily habit rather than a temporary resolution. Using the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6 as a model, the sermon teaches that prayer is about relationship, not ritual. Prayer begins with calling God “Father,” emphasizing intimacy and personal connection. It produces confidence because God hears us, humility because we depend on Him for daily needs, partnership as we pray for His kingdom to come, mercy as we forgive others, and deliverance from temptation and evil. In a culture filled with anxiety and information overload, prayer becomes the antidote for fear and worry. Believers are encouraged to develop a private prayer life, find their own rhythm of prayer, and intentionally cultivate habits that deepen their relationship with God and invite His transforming power into everyday life.

If you need prayer, have questions, or want to connect, we would love to hear from you.

I’m going to begin in In Matthew chapter 6 verse 9 And this is the Lord’s Prayer, okay This then is how you should pray our Father in heaven Hallowed be your name your kingdom come your will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us today our daily bread and Forgive us our debts as we also have forgiven our debtors and lead us not into temptation But deliver us from the evil one Let’s pray Lord, thank you for your word. And thank you for this model prayer that not only teaches us about the importance of praying but Reveals to us the importance of a relationship with our Father Lord, I pray for each person here this morning that we wouldn’t view prayer as a ritual or as a formula or as an incantation To try to bribe or move God, but Lord we would see prayer as an opportunity to have a relationship with Father God Lord make us hungry for a relationship with you Lord, we don’t just pray because we need things. We don’t just pray because you’re a Santa Claus in heaven But Lord we pray because you are the Lord of Lords You’re the King of Kings and as Jesus taught us to pray you are our Father So Lord, I pray that you would stir up within us today the habit of praying Based on the foundation of a relationship with you in Jesus name. Amen Amen, you may be seated and God bless you. God bless you this morning So what does it mean to cultivate a life of prayer? I just want to begin there because that’s the title of the message and as I think about having a prayer life I like that word cultivate last week We looked at the allegory of the vine how Jesus is the vine the father is the gardener and we’re the branches If we’re gonna have a vibrant relationship with the Lord through prayer, we’re gonna have to cultivate that It’s not just gonna happen by accident When a farmer goes out to sow his seed Long before the the core the kernel of corn goes into the ground. There’s been a lot of preparation, right? There’s there’s been either equipment and maybe it’s easier for us to think of gardening So we don’t have to think about all those big pieces of equipment But just if a gardener goes out to plant flowers or plant tomatoes or green peppers, whatever it is They have to go out and prepare that soil They have to work that soil maybe even Some people will even test their soil and find out it doesn’t have the right nutrients and then you add certain things to your soil so long before The the seed goes in the ground someone is cultivating that soil and and that’s the preparation that then when the seed goes in the ground and then water is added and Sunlight is added then things begin to grow And so if I want to cultivate a life of prayer, I’ve got to prepare my heart I’ve got to find a time a place I’ve got to intentionally And with the right heart with a genuine heart and genuine effort I’ve got to spend time and prepare myself to pray and have a relationship with the Lord That’s what I mean when I say cultivating a prayer life and so right from the start I want to encourage each and every one of us not just to make a resolution that I’m gonna pray more But think about your life habits What might need to change so that you could prepare yourself for prayer What in your daily schedule and I want to be very careful here not to be religious not to be ritualistic not to be Just traditional like okay You’ve got to find an hour and a half every morning before you really want to get up to pray In order to be a really good prayer person No That’s not where I’m headed now if that works for you and I can tell you as I get older That works really good for me because I’m awake usually five or six o’clock in the morning anyways But if you’ve got kids at home and you had to stay up late with them all night You may be really tired in the morning And so getting up in the morning and having a prayer time may not work for you But what about when you go for a walk pushing that stroller? What about when you’re standing in the kitchen and you’re preparing a meal? Maybe those are good times for prayer Maybe as you take a break at work and you have 15 minutes You’ve been working hard all day and you get to go out and have a lunch break or a 15-minute break Maybe that’s a good time to read a five-minute devotional And so I don’t want us to be you know, really rigid and when we think about our prayer life Yes, it’s good. If you can get up in the morning and pray for an hour every morning. Praise God That is wonderful. If you can be a church prayer meetings We invite you to do that common pray with us. But what’s most important is you find your own rhythm? And you find your own habit in life of how you can spend more time relating with God through prayer And what is prayer prayer is talking with God and prayer is listening to God Now I want to share just some general truths as we get started before we look at the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew chapter 9 Here’s some general truths on prayer The first thing we know about prayer from God’s Word is God hears us When we pray and I want to turn to 1st John chapter 5 verse 14, and I want to read this Here’s what the Bible says. This is the confidence. I love that word This is the confidence we have in approaching God is that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us now What that means is sometimes when I pray and I’m not praying according to God’s will I really shouldn’t expect an answer So there’s a purifying Process when I pray is that as I pray God Will even direct my heart to pray prayers that are according to his will because sometimes I come to God and I just want what I want and I want it now and God might really be saying to you or to me You shouldn’t even be praying that You should do that. That’s not that’s not gonna get an answer Right, so there’s a there’s a purifying process when we pray But in general the Bible teaches us that as a believer when you pray you should go to God with confidence Knowing that he hears you and if you’re praying according to his will he’s gonna hear you and he’s gonna answer your prayer Another general truth as it relates to prayer and what the Bible teaches us Romans 8 26 the Spirit of God Helps you when you pray and so when you’re praying it’s something spiritual is happening when you pray to The King of Kings and the Lord of Lords when you pray to your Savior Jesus The very Spirit of God is there to help you pray Wow Another truth we see in Scripture is prayer is an act of humility And I’m gonna touch on this in the Lord’s Prayer here in just a moment, but I wanted to turn back to 2nd Chronicles 2nd Chronicles chapter 714. I think most of us know this passage of Scripture. It’s been quoted many times But here’s what it says in the 7th chapter verse 14 if my people Who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways Then I will hear from heaven and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land Isn’t it interesting right before it says pray and seek the face of God? humble themselves And so when we pray there’s there’s something happening in us When we go to God and say Lord, it’s me I need help Lord, it’s me. I just I want to have a relationship with you. I want you to be a part of my daily life What we’re really doing is we’re humbling ourselves. And if anything is needed in our current generation, that’s it We’re a culture that has rejected God work. We’re a generation that has said I can do it my way I can do it all by myself and Yes, we’ve we’ve we’ve sent people out into space we can engineer amazing roads and bridges But we haven’t solved the basic human problem Education won’t solve it more money won’t solve it only Jesus Will solve what ails the human person and so when you pray? You’re humbling yourself before the Lord You’re saying God I can’t do this. I don’t even want to do this life on my own I want to invite you into my life. I want you to be a part of my life. I’m gonna humble myself I’m gonna seek your face I’m gonna pray I Also love Philippians 4 6 because it reminds us in general when we think about prayer Prayer is an antidote for fear for worry for anxiety And again, that’s so important for us today in this culture because we are living with information Overload we’re we’re living in a generation where people are anxious struggling to make decisions because there’s so much information coming and so So many concerns and burdens I mean when I was a child if something bad was happening across the world. I didn’t know about it In fact when I was a kid out playing kick the can in Lafayette, Indiana You know in the summer and that’s what we used to do you’d kick the can and run or I can’t remember how it went But but you know, I didn’t know that over in Oklahoma. There had been some big tragedy and Yet in today’s world because of the iPhone and the smartphones and and computers and all the social media that Many of our children many of our junior hires high schools They have grown up in an era where there is so much information Much of it bad. I mean you can go check the news on any given day and find out all of the crises that are taking place not just in your city or your state but all over the nation all over the world and Even for me as an adult, you know what happens sometimes I Start to worry. I start to go. Wow, I Start to feel a little anxious and like Lord, what am I doing? I start to go Wow, I Start to feel a little anxious and like Lord what am I supposed to do about feeding the hungry over here and what am I supposed to do about helping this tragedy over in this country or this state and So we’re living in a generation where for many of our young people. They’re struggling with anxiety They’re struggling with fears and worries and if we’re honest this morning many of us right here today as you hear me Share this this message on prayer you’re sitting there going pastor. You’re right. I struggle with anxiety. I Struggle with fears and things. I want to do something about but I can’t control them. What’s the answer? Take it to the Lord in prayer Prayer is an antidote for fear for worry for anxiety. Look with me there at Philippians chapter 4 verse 6 Philippians 4 verse 6 do not be anxious up about anything But in every situation by prayer and petition with Thanksgiving present your requests to God And so in many ways prayer is a choice. Am I gonna hold on to this or am I gonna let it go? Am I gonna hold on to the anxieties and the fears and the worries that just weigh me down or am I going to begin? To build the habit of prayer in my life so that every time I’m feeling anxious every time I’m concerned About one of my kids one of my grandkids I’m just gonna go to God in prayer I remember a season of life for Jenny and I where we were on the mission field and it just seemed like there were a few months when We were just facing Obstacles and challenges things were coming at us that we were like, wow Where is that coming from? We felt under attack One of the good things about it is it was a season in our life Where because we did feel under attack from the outside so much it really drew us close together And that was a great part of it But one of the things that came out of that is Jenny and I agreed That every time we had something that we felt was a spiritual attack or we were worried we were anxious We were just not gonna say let’s pray about that later We were gonna stop what we were doing and right then we were just gonna present that to the Lord and then let it go You know what it worked It worked I’m not saying God always answered those prayers immediately often there was a delay But what worked is the difference in our own emotions? And that’s what Paul is talking about in Philippians chapter 4 verse 6 How do we be anxious for nothing? We present our needs to the Lord prayer is an antidote It’s the cure for the worries and the fears and the anxieties That we often struggle with in life And then so many other scriptures in general teach us that we are to pray without ceasing we’re to never give up and we’re to pray with faith And so I want to encourage us to be people of prayer let’s look together at the Lord’s Prayer And the first truth I see here in Matthew chapter 6 actually doesn’t come out of the Lord’s Prayer but it comes right before that in the first part of Matthew chapter 6 look with me at verse 6 But when you pray go into your room and shut the door and pray to your father who is in secret and your father who? Sees in secret will reward you That wonderful that there is a reward for a private prayer life You know the Pharisees in the days of Jesus. They were very interested to be seen by others That they were spiritual Sadly there’s much of that that goes on in our own lives today And so I’m here to tell all of us today God is not as concerned with how much the pastor prays in front of other people God is concerned with whether or not the pastor actually is spending time in prayer at home God is not nearly concerned with whether people think you pray a lot What God is concerned with is do you have a private prayer habit Are you walking with God? Are you talking with God? Are you listening to God? Are you spending time in his words spending time in prayer and Maybe that’s in time in the morning. Maybe that’s a lunch break. Maybe that’s in the evening before you go to bed Maybe that’s if you’re like me, it’s when you’re exercising or when you go for a walk Maybe you like to turn the worship music on in the morning when you’re getting ready to go to work and you just begin to Worship God and begin to talk with the Lord Do you have a private prayer life that no one else knows about I Love it here that Jesus says that’s what God rewards So it’s not how many times you pray at church or whether you can pray aloud or pray silently or feel comfortable praying in front Of other people Jesus says it’s your private prayer life that matters And when you look at the practice of Jesus, he would go to the mountains and pray he would pray all night He’d pray in the garden. He’d pray out in the boat. You you don’t see a lot of stories about Jesus of him You know setting up shop in the temple and saying hey, I’m just gonna spend some time praying here So everybody that goes by can see me praying Jesus had a private relationship with God And again, that’s what prayer is. Amen. Prayer is your relationship with the Father Relationship with the Father and We have this as a possibility because of what Jesus has accomplished on the cross and through his resurrection You can go to the throne of grace With confidence because of what Jesus has done for you, but it’s it’s not about Showing yourself to be a person of prayer it’s about having a personal relationship with Father God and Enjoying talking with him and hearing from him and so I want to encourage you even as we get into the Lord’s Prayer develop cultivate a private prayer life There’s reward to that. It will enrich your relationship with God You’ll begin to hear the voice of God You’ll begin to to have your own desires purified And and become more of what God wants you to be a second truth that I see in this chapter And now we move into the Lord’s Prayer is that prayer produces a relationship with God. I love it that as Jesus Gave this model prayer the Lord’s Prayer that he begins with father and And we know there there was two or three different Aramaic or Hebrew ways Abunai or Abbi and but Jesus used a really per a personal way to say Daddy father it was it was Abba and again It’s one of the few words when I was in Israel recently that that I actually was able to hear and go Oh, they just said Abba That’s I don’t really know Hebrew that well at least not spoken Hebrew and and but that was so cool It’s like oh, he just she just said Abba to her dad And so it’s it’s wonderful here that when Jesus Teaches us to pray he begins with these words pray like this our Father in heaven Hallowed be your name, and so how do we relate to God we call him father? So God is not the God of the deist where he’s just this distant God out there somewhere who created the world and like made A watch and wound it and then left it alone. No the God of the Bible is a personal God When you can call him father you can call him daddy. He knows you you you you know him Okay, maybe dad But he’s personal You you can have a relationship with him Jesus will go on here in a few verses and talk about don’t pray the way the pagans pray Well see the pagans had a different view of God God was a distant Force Out there maybe Jupiter, maybe Apollo’s you know He was a a God out there somewhere, and what you really needed to do was come up with incantations and formulas Where you could bribe God you you could if you could say the right things and say it enough times Then somehow some way maybe you could bribe God into doing what you wanted God to do so they had a God for everything In the first century you remember Paul when he’s in Athens There’s a there’s a statue to every kind of God, and he says oh, and you’ve even got a statue to the unknown God They didn’t want to miss anybody But the pagans in the first century their way of Praying to God it wasn’t a relationship It was I want to come up with some formula that I say ten times and then God has to Bless my crops or God will then make me fertile or But Jesus when he begins his model prayer he begins with relationship prayer is begins it ends with relationship I Hope you want to have a relationship with God Because that’s the God of the Bible the God of the Bible wants to have a relationship with you That’s the story of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation He is a personal God who loves you Jesus came and died for you on the cross so that your Brokenness and your sinfulness could be dealt with and done away with so that you could have a new life Day and day out we can walk with God we can talk with God We can have a relationship with him pray like this our Father in heaven a third truth is prayer produces partnership When I pray I’m building my relationship with the Lord I’m learning how to walk with God, but when I pray and I have a habit of prayer in my life I’m also being invited into a partnership With the kingdom of God verse 10 Matthew 6 your kingdom come Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven This is the desire the heart level desire of every believer and when you pray that grows When you pray to the Lord and you spend time in prayer That desire that the kingdom of God would come in your life and the kingdom of heaven would come in this on this earth it just begins to grow your desires begin to fade away and God’s plans and God’s purpose and and God’s desires begin to grow in your heart I was thinking of John chapter 15 you remember in John 15 verse 15 Jesus says to his disciples I no longer call you servants But I call you friends Wow and so if you’re a follower of Jesus this morning if you’re walking with the Lord Jesus calls you a friend not just a servant and A servant just does what they’re told but a friend is is almost like a business partner a friend is a part of Kingdom business. Can you imagine that this morning? That what Jesus is really teaching us in this model prayer that we call the Lord’s Prayer he is saying to you as his followers you as you pray and you come to me as Father and you have that relationship that really we have a partnership That I’m gonna work in you and through you to accomplish what I want to accomplish By bringing my kingdom and my will to this earth. Wow, that’s it can feel a little heavy Think about that as a believer as a Christian family as a local church. We have a responsibility To not only pray your kingdom come your will be done But then to get up as we pray and go live that out and say Lord when I interact with people. I’m bringing your kingdom When I interact with my community, I am bringing the heavenly kingdom I can’t do that on my own but but through the Lord’s help with the Lord’s help we as a church and As Christian families, we are here to to bring the kingdom of God on this earth Wow, and the Spirit helps us do that. So prayer produces Partnership a fourth truth that we see in the Lord’s Prayer is prayer and we mentioned this when we mentioned 2nd Chronicles 7 prayer produces a humble life You know I learned very early on in my Christian life that in those seasons and those weeks and days when I just didn’t have time for Prayer what I was really saying to God is I’m good. I Got it. I Can do it all by myself? And then something would happen in life is that man? I got to get back to talking with God. I Got to get back to praying. I got to get back to seeking God’s face So I don’t know where you are this day or this week and all of that But what I know for sure is that when we pray We are humbling ourselves and saying Lord. I’m dependent on you That’s what this prayer in verse 11 teaches us. Jesus taught us to pray give us today our daily bread And I love it that it’s daily bread. It’s not next week’s bread. It’s Lord. Just help me today What Jesus is teaching us here is that as we’re walking with God and building a relationship with our father We need to realize that we are completely Dependent on the Lord For our daily bread in the days of Jesus Bread was was very important That’s why Jesus said I am the bread of life because in his day in Judea and throughout the Roman Empire Bread was a staple. I mean There’s you can read how even when there was trouble in Rome for example, the Emperor would offer the circus as a spectacle and then bread and That’s how he would keep there not being riots and keep people happy in the city of Rome I remember one time when we had just arrived in Ukraine and they were having a mayoral They were an election for the mayor in Kiev and one of the guys running Actually promised a certain price for bread and I just I was like, wow That is so cool He was saying vote for me and I will guarantee that bread will be this price and he was saying to the people Hey, I know that’s important to you And so whether you think of give us our daily meal I Mean daily bread is not really just bread. It’s it’s all those things you need in life And God knows your need God knows your need to pay rent God knows your need to pay your utilities God God knows the need that you have to prepare for retirement God knows the need that you have to help your kids go to college You know You can just keep adding on to the list God knows all of these daily needs and what Jesus is teaching us here Is that when we try to do those things ourselves? We are saying God I’m independent of you. I’m good But when we go to prayer and we build up the habit of prayer in our life What we’re really doing is saying Lord. I need you. I’m dependent on you I need you not only for my daily bread, but I need you for my daily finances. I need I can’t meet my needs Myself You see watch out that’s what your flesh will tell you that’s what this world will tell you is that you can do good all by yourself You can find contentment and satisfaction all by yourself outside of God, but the Bible testifies that that’s not true The Bible speaks to us and says no you need God God has created a emptiness in your Humanity that until you connect with your creator until you connect with your Savior Until you’ve been rescued and redeemed by the Lord Jesus Christ. You don’t know what satisfaction or contentment is But when you come to the Lord because that’s how God designed us That’s how God made us and if we try to live life on our own on our own terms in our own way We remain in our sin we remain in our brokenness we remain in our dysfunction and friends We don’t have to turn the news on or turn the computer on to learn about all that dysfunction I could tell you some stories about my own family. I Mean you you could tell me some stories about your own past, right? We’ve we can all say in a sense such were some of us We get it that that life can be very dysfunctional life can be very broken but When we Pray Lord, I’m gonna depend on you. I need you in my life That’s when things begin to change. And so Jesus taught us to pray give us today our daily bread. So even the daily bread That might be easy. Why go out make my own bread Right. I’m sure there’s somebody here that could do that No, Jesus was saying I’m the bread of life when you pray pray like this pray father God Give me daily bread because I don’t want to try to do life on my own. I want to find satisfaction and and health From you and from my relationship with you a fifth a fifth truth that we see is in verse 12 Prayer produces a life of mercy look at Matthew 6 12 Jesus urges us to pray and forgive us our debts as we also have forgiven our debtors and as you know forgiveness is a unique aspect of Christianity Christianity among world religions is a religion that offers forgiveness how because God sent his son to die on a cross as the propitiation or substitute for the sins of The whole world for your sins and for my sins What’s interesting about this passage in verse 12 is there’s a connection between my sins being forgiven by God and My willingness to forgive others who have harmed me Wow Think about that. Let me read it again and forgive us our debts as we also have forgiven our debtors So what that says to me is as I’m praying that prayer is changing my heart and as I’m willing to offer other people Mercy, it’s I’m aligning myself with God and now I’m ready to receive mercy from God Wow What Jesus is saying is he wants us to have merciful hearts just like God has a merciful heart Exodus 34 6 and 7 reminds us that God is a God of grace. He’s a God of mercy He’s also a God of justice, but he is a God that is abounding and steadfast love He is a God of grace and mercy and when we are in the presence of God And how many times in life? My prayers have started get them God Come on let’s be real has anybody other than me ever been in some real challenges in life Come on, and you go to God in prayer and you want to be a good Christian say, okay God I need to pray about this get them God And Then I ran through this read through the Psalms and realized even King David prayed prayers like that And so sometimes that’s where our praying starts, but in those moments, we’re not even ready We’re not ready to receive from God We’re not ready to receive his forgiveness or or hear the heart of God because we’re still God they hurt me They wronged me. They offended me get them God, but as we pray and Especially as we pray what Jesus taught us to pray and forgive us our debts as we also have forgiven our debtors Something begins to change in our lives Something begins to change in our hearts and we begin to have the mercy of God in our hearts We begin to have the compassion of God for other people in our heart So rather than praying Lord get them get them back Deal with them Lord, we begin to pray Lord. Would you bless that person that hurt me? Would you bless them? Would you help them? Yes, Lord, maybe show them the error of their way, but would you just bless them really good Lord? I’m gonna let them go I’m gonna I’m gonna let go of that hurt and I’m just gonna let you handle it but I’m praying Lord, would you bless them and the mercy of God just begins to flow in your life and And a final truth this morning Prayer produces deliverance Verse 13 Jesus wraps up this prayer and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil This is the desire of every Christian That we would be led away from sin led away from evil that we would be led Into the heart of God to be more of what God Wants us to be See it’s prayer that can produce deliverance in your life I want you to take a minute this morning and think about what area of your life. Do you need breakthrough? What area of your life do you need? Deliverance what area of your life? Do you need God to really show up? If you’re willing to take that to God in prayer Through that prayer you can experience breakthrough you can experience deliverance That’s what we preach. That’s what we teach. That’s what we believe. That’s what we practice That as we go through things on this earth Trying to handle it our own way is not the path for us as followers of Jesus But we need to develop a habit of prayer in our life a relationship Of talking with God of walking with God and that as we do that we can fully expect evil to be minimized in our lives We can fully affect sin to be done away with in our life because we’re inviting God into our life through prayer So I want to invite us this morning to be people of prayer number one Are you a person of prayer? Are you open to that? Are you willing to build up your faith? Are you a person of prayer? Are you open to that? Are you willing to build up a habit of praying in your life? You can do it so many different ways. There’s no one way to be a person of prayer Some of us stand when we pray some of us kneel when we pray some of us just like to walk around and talk with The Lord some of us like to turn on worship music and pray, but I want to encourage you believer Make sure you’re cultivating a life of prayer There is a reward for having a private prayer life and as you spend time at God’s presence he will begin Delivering you he will begin setting your feet on the rock. He will begin Making a difference in your life. Will you stand with me this morning? In just a moment, I want to I want to close in in prayer But I want to give us an opportunity to respond to the message this morning I Of course hope all of us here as you’re listening or saying pastor. Yes. I want to be a person of prayer I want to have a prayer life and I hope that’s you right? I hope that’s all of us saying pastor I want to have a habit of prayer in my life But I want to take a minute and give someone here an opportunity just to say Lord Jesus I’ve been trying to do it all by myself and today I Want to include Father God in my life and so would you just close your eyes bow your heads and let’s just take a minute and pray and If this morning if you want to take that step that just says Jesus I need you in my life Father God. I want you in my life Would you just look up at me and kind of stare at me and let me know otherwise everybody’s praying But would you just stare at me and say I want God in my life and for you It may be the first time you’ve ever done that. I Want God in my life? Just gonna wait just a moment If you’re in the way in the back, maybe you need to wave at me so I can see it I can’t don’t know if we even see that far back Lord you see us all here this morning and Lord I pray for each and every person That today would be the day that we would put God first in our lives That is we are spending time praying together as a congregation That we would pray and ask you Father God to come into our lives through the gift of your son Jesus And we would begin a relationship with you we would begin to walk with you and talk with you And Lord I pray for each believer here today That you would bring deliverance into their life that you would bring breakthroughs into their life as they develop the habit of prayer We give you thanks Lord in Jesus name in Jesus name.
